Again, with the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial as a motivating deadline ….Richland secured grant funds and worked with corporate partner Battelle’s Pacific Northwest National Labs to create a scenic overlook above Bateman Island (that same island where the cleanup project took place!).

This spot looks over the place where the Yakima River flows into the Columbia River… the furthest up-river location identified in the Lewis & Clark journals.

A beautiful map of the expedition across America is included in the plaza….helping showcase our community’s ties to this remarkable part of history.
