The 62-foot tall lighthouse is the centerpiece of a 15,000 square foot public plaza. We added bike racks, decorative railings, and benches. We’re making these improvements to transform the island into a waterfront destination and to help revitalize downtown Kennewick.
Challenge/Success:
Height restrictions
Night sky issues, and limits on lantern light…had to take solar light to both planning commission and city council for demonstrations
View analysis required for Dept. of Ecology
ADA compliance issues [would have affected both cost and design and final look/feel]
US Coast Guard-approved Private Aid to Navigation (PATON) lighthouse…on USCG navigational charts.
Concrete was stamped and colored to imitate a ray of light emanates away from the lighthouse
Senior portraits, group events, and already several weddings at the lighthouse plaza
